Promoting study courses

Training of students in many molecular areas of modern biology represents a major task of the RCB. Our goal is to bundle molecular biology and biochemical topics and to distribute them to the different teaching competences of the participating groups. Thus, students can experience important cellular processes from different angels. The RCB was originally consolidated from the chairs of biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, microbiology and plant physiology. It thus appears that especially these areas are covered by the different RCB working groups to educate young academics. Training includes lectures, seminars and all kinds of practical courses and ranges from basic first semester events to advanced PhD programs.

The PI´s and staff members contribute to the following programs: Whereas in basic courses a wide spectrum of important biochemical processes is covered, key contents of advanced courses are RNA biology, regulation of gene expression, structure and function of chromatin, cell cycle control, metabolism of archaea, enzymology, and membrane transport processes. Emphasis in training of advanced students are sophisticated method courses to get insights and experience in state-of the art technologies like high throughput sequencing, mass spectrometry, NMR, X-Ray crystallography, Cryo-EM, single molecule analysis FRET and FISH, and microscale thermophoresis.

PhD students

PhD students receive an intensive and well-structured training within our groups, and in turn they contribute significantly to the success of our research topics. This is promoted by the establishment of The Regensburg International Graduate School of Life Sciences (RIGeL) . It offers a structured PhD program including the attendance of summer schools, lab courses, meetings etc. and contains quality control instruments to regulate and monitor the progress of the individual PhD work. Within RIGeL the collaborative research center SFB960 supported research training group “Graduate Research Academy RNA Biology” was established. The “Graduate Research Academy RNA Biology“ supports PhD students to pursue their projects and to assist them in their professional career development. Along these lines, the “Graduate Research Academy” organizes, for example, the “RNA Lecture Series”, which became one of the most popular lectures for advanced students. In such courses international experts as well as group leaders of the RCB instruct a group of 10-15 selected graduate students from European universities.
